Death Toll Of Rains In Brazil
Rises To 231
RIO DE JANEIRO - The death toll of the
landslides as a result of pouring rains in
Brazil rose to 231 on Monday, the local
Firemen Corps said.
The firemen said that they have finished the
rescue work in Dos Prazeres Hill in Santa
Teresa district in Rio de Janeiro, after
finding the last two corpses, to make a
total of 30 corpses in the zone.
The rescue continues in Do Bumba Hill and
the neighboring city of Niteroi, in the
other side of Guanabara Bay, where there
were found 33 corpses and it is expected to
find even more.
The number of deaths in Niteroi rose to 146,
in Rio de Janeiro to 65, while the rest of
the deaths are from Sao Goncalo
municipality, where there were found 16 and
the other four were from Petropolis, Mage,
Nilopolis and Paracambi.
Rio de Janeiro's mayor office announced on
Monday it began the evacuation of the
inhabitants of Fogueteiros and Prazeres
Hills, in Santa Teresa district, two of the
eight hills where there are more risks.
The evacuated families will be relocated and
receive money to rent a provisional house.
