Hugo Chávez Visits Nicaragua
MANAGUA - Venezuelan president Hugo Chavez
arrived in Nicaragua the eve and was
welcomed at the air terminal by his peer
Daniel Ortega accompanied by members of his
cabinet.
Both heads of State started talks in the
presidential headquarters after brief
speeches at the international airport.
The welcoming ceremony was attended by
Rosario Murillo, wife of President Ortega
and Coordinator of the Communication and
Citizenship Council and the chief of the
army, general Julio Cesar Aviles.
Also present was the chief of the National
Police, Aminta Granera and Commander Tomas
Borge, the only founder of the Frente
Sandinista de Liberacion Nacional (FSLN)
alive, together with several ministers and
other high officials.
Ortega welcomed Chavez to Nicaragua and
recalled that the visit coincides with the
8th anniversary of the popular victory over
the coup d'tat perpetrated against the
Venezuelan president in April, 2002.
Chavez, for his part, showed his emotion for
being again in Nicaragua, land he described
as "heroic and revolutionary, where after
several years the road of Bolivar and
Sandino was retaken."
He referred to the membership of both
countries in the Bolivarian Alliance of the
Peoples of our America (ALBA) and extolled
that only the political, social, geographic
and economic union "will allow us to be free
once and forever of all the chains of empire
and dependency."
