Panama to Activate Air-sea Base

PANAMA - The Bahia Piña air and sea base in the Panamanian province of Darien this month will join the eleven facilities of that type the government plans to set up, with the excuse of facing drug trafficking.

Government and Justice Minister Jose Raul Mulino announced the base is scheduled to be opened on April 23, and will be one of the most important fighting drug trafficking. Its location precisely takes into account a territory bordering Colombia.

In addition, local authorities plan to set up other bases in Rambala (Bocas del Toro province) before the month closes.

The two bases will join those already functioning in Quebrada de Piedra ( Chiriqui province).

Similarly, bases in Coiba and Punta Coco islands are likely to be opened by the mid of the year. Apart from the facilities mentioned, Panama will have air and sea bases in Chiriqui Grande, Colon Island, El Porvenir, and Puerto Obaldia.

The governmental projects have been rejected by trade unions and students, who consider that step could mean US military presence in the country.
