COSEVI To Take
Legal Action
Against Unpaid
Traffic Tickets
Although it
still unclear if
and when the
lower traffic
fines will apply
and if they will
be grandfathered
in, the Consejo
de Seguridad
Vial (COSEVI)
has decided it
will not wait
out the process
to start
applying legal
and late fees to
outstanding
fines.
The COSEVI said
it will begin
adding
surcharges to
all drivers who
accumulate fines
of ˘400.000 or
more.
The surcharge
policy is not
new, just that
in most of the
cases, under the
old fines, the
amounts were to
small to warrant
legal action.
It would cost
more to collect
a ˘2.000 or
˘5.000 fine, the
average fines
prior to March
1, 2010.
However, now
that the fines
are substantial
and the
possibility that
a driver may
decide not to
pay or not be
able to pay, the
COSEVI will
begin to take
legal action.
Rocio Gambao,
director of the
COSEVI,
explained that
the "cobros
judiciales" will
be only applied
to oustanding
fines issued
under the new
Ley de Tránsito.
