Colombia Proposals on
Venezuela Trips Worrying
BOGOTA - Colombian authorities in bordering
departments have voiced their concern over
governmental recommendations on nationals
traveling to Venezuela.
Norte de Santander's Governor William
Villamizar said the Foreign Ministry's
statements could bring about harmful
consequences for the region.
Villamizar said he respected the Foreigh
Ministry's decisions but in some cases, the
measures could result in detrimental effects
for people who work in bordering areas.
We remain expectant to what might happen,
the new regulations may well generate more
problems with Venezuelan authorities, the
governor said.
We cannot go to extremes, the ideal would be
to look for ways out that do not affect the
Colombian people, the official added.
The Colombian Foreign Ministry yesterday
warned Colombians on alleged risks traveling
to Venezuela, and recommended tourists to
abstain from making that decision, Caracol
Radio recalled.
Foreign Minister Jaime Bermudez suggested
Colombians not to travel to the neighboring
nation unless absolutely necessary, and
explained the proposal aims at defending
Colombians' interests.
The administration of President Alvaro Uribe
also ordered diplomats not to attend events
for the bicentennial of independence
organized by the Venezuelan government in
any country. |
