OIJ Director: We
Will Enter The
UCR At Will
Jorge Rojas, the
director of the
Organismo de
Investigación
Judicial (OIJ)
said on Friday
that his
officers will
enter the
Universidad de
Costa Rica (UCR)
campus at will
and as many
times deemed
necessary.
The announcement
came
notwithstanding
the controversy
at the beginning
of the week and
a riot ensued
after OIJ
officials
entered the
campus to arrest
an alleged
corrupt campus
traffic
official.
Rojas was clear
in his words
that the OIJ or
any other police
body cannot wait
on a ruling of
the courts on
whether Monday's
action was
justified or
not.
At the heart of
the debate is
the autonomy of
the university,
students saying
police cannot
enter the campus
at will and that
their rights and
the rights of
the university
are being
trampled on.
However, Rojas
is adamant,
saying he can't
wait for the UCR
will quickly
become a den for
criminals.
On MOnday a
group of OIJ
officials,
accompanied by
the Fuerza
Pública
(police),
entered the
campus following
a charge by an
individual
against a
traffic official
who was
allegedly
demanding bribes
or tow his mini
bus.
Police arriving
at the campus
were told by the
security guard
that he didn't
have the
authority to
allow entry,
thus the OIJ
stormed the
campus to make
the arrest,
after which a
riot broke out.
Five people -
four students
and a teacher -
were also
arrested for
rioting and
later released
when the UCR
director
intervened
directly with
the ministra de
Seguridad,
Janina Del
Vecchio.
A group of
students took to
violence during
Tuesday and
Wednesday,
threatening
authorities to
stay away from
the campus
without
authority. |
