More Victims
An entire family
of five became
the latest
victims of Costa
Rica's bad
roads, with one
man dying and
his wife and
three children
clinging for
life in a
Saturday morning
traffic accident
in the area
known as Ferrio
de la Unión.
The family
Zamora Fonseca -
husband, wife
and three
children - left
Limón Saturday
morning, headed
for San José for
a medical
appointment.
The Zamoras
decided to take
the long way to
San José due to
the closure of
the Braulio
Carrillo in the
area of the
Zurquí, closed
from mudslides
from the heavy
rain of Friday.
At mid way, in
the area known
as Ferrio in La
Unión de Cartago
(east of San
José), the heavy
rain the slick
and narrow road
and lack of
guardrails, all
contributed to
the family
vehicle leaving
the road
dropping into
the creek
running along
side of the
road.
The Cruz Roja
(Red Cross) and
Bomberos
(firefighters)
on the scene
were faced with
the complicate
task of pulling
out the
survivors, as
the entire
family was
trapped inside
the vehicle.
Once they were
pulled, the
mother and her
17 year old son
were taken to
the Calderón
Guardia
hospital, while
the 13 year and
4 year olds were
taken to the
Hospital
Nacional de
Niños, all four
are in delicate
condition in
hospital.
