Nicaragua: Workers' March Vs Right-Wing Deputies

MANAGUA - Workers from different sectors of the capital have marched towards the seat of the National Assembly on Tuesday to protest against the destabilizing actions of the opposition's deputies.

Secretary General of the National Association of Nicaraguan Educators Jose Antonio Zepeda called on Monday all the teachers and workers of other sectors to participate in the demonstration to demand the Parliament to legislate in favour of the interests of the country and put an end to the paralysis caused by the anti-Sandinista opposition.

President of the National Workers Front Gustavo Porras affirmed that the right-wing deputies have a destabilizing plan against the Sandinista government and are ignoring the passing of important bills of social benefit.

Union leaders recalled that the National Assembly has been paralyzed for nearly four months and has only passed one bill and a decree so far this year.

Opposition deputies earn $4,000 per month and they only go to the legislative chamber to sabotage the sessions since January, according to Bayardo Arce, Economic Advisor of President Daniel Ortega.

Opposition parties have been blocking the election of the judges of the branches of government at the Parliament for two months and they refuse to accept a constitutional article that allows these officials to remain in their posts until they are ratified or replaced.
