Cameras To Keep
An Eye On Crime
In San José
50 cameras will
be keeping an
eye on San José
to vigil
criminal
activity and its
images to be
used in court as
proof against
those who commit
offences.
The cameras are
hooked up the
Centro de
Monitoreo
Institucional of
the Policía
Municipal de San
José, located in
Paseo Colón,
transmitting
live feeds.
Some of the key
areas covered by
the camera lens
are the
boulevards of
Avenida Central
and Avenida 4,
Avenidas 10 and
12, Barrio
Cristo Rey,
Barrio Cuba and
the Iglesia
Santa Teresita
in Barrio
Escalante.
The municipal
police will also
be monitoring
the areas around
the hospitals
Calderón Guardia
and the San Juan
de Dios, the
Mercado Central
(Central
Market), the
area known as
the Coca Cola,
the Plaza de la
Cultura, Parque
Okayama and
Parque Nacional.
A total of 25
cameras will be
focused on the
preceding areas,
the rest will
focus in on
municipal
buildings and
installations
all over San
José.
The cameras, in
addition to
alerting police
to crimes in
progress, will
also be
recording the
incident which
can then be
offered as
evidence in a
trial.
The cameras have
"zoom"
capabilities to
focus on a
vehicle's
license plate,
for instance, or
the face of a
criminal in
action.
The recordings
are stored for
up to 90 days,
the time
required by the
judicial system.
The cost of the
project is ¢200
million colones,
according to
Rafael Arias,
advisor to the
Municipalidad de
San José. Arias
added that an
additional 20
cameras are
being
considered.
In addition, the
cameras
themselves will
be the focus of
protection as
they are
installed with a
GPS system to
verify the
cameras location
at all times.
