Official Nabbed
For Taking
Bribes
Receiving pay
offs for help
with residency
has landed an
immigration
official in
jail. The
official was
suprised by
police while she
was behind the
counter at the
Plataforma de
Servicios in the
immigration
offices in La
Uruca, in San
José.
The official,
identified by
her last name,
Mora, was under
investigation by
the Unidad
Especializada de
Fraudes del
Ministerio
Público for
falsifying
documents, fraud
and
misrepresentation.
The woman had
worked as an
immigration
official for the
last four years
and is said to
have been
charging
foreigners
between us$3.000
and us$4.000 to
obtain them
their residency.
The director de
Migración, Mario
Zamora, said
yesterday that
her co-workers
were surprised
at the arrest,
as they had
never suspected
her woman to
have done such a
thing.
In addition to
Mora, a lawyer
and another
woman were
detained by the
Organismo de
Investigación
Judicial (OIJ),
for being
conspirators in
the act.
Authorities say
they confiscated
a number of
falsified
documents that
included
passports and
residency cards.
Apparently the
group had been
operating for
several years,
according to the
Ministerio
Público
investigation.
