Seventh Journalist Murdered
in Honduras
TEGUCIGALPA - Honduran journalist Georgino
Orellana, from the San Pedro Sula television
station, was murdered in the last few hours,
amid a wave of violence that already killed
seven media professionals.
Orellana, 48, was shot in his head as he
left his job, after concluding a television
news program.
He was also a Journalism School professor at
the National Autonomous University.
The number of reporters shot dead during
this year in Honduras amounted to seven, and
the country has become the most dangerous
nation to exercise that profession.
Victims are anchorman Joseph Ochoa of
channel 51 in Tegucigalpa, radio reporter
David Meza in La Ceiba, radio journalists
Jose Bayardo Mairena and Victor Manuel
Juarez, from Olancho, television journalist
Nahum Palacios in Colon, and radio announcer
Luis Antonio Chevez in San Pedro Sula.
Those crimes are so far still unpunished,
and authorities have not tried none of
perpetrators and masterminds of those
murders against that sector.
Irina Bokova, general director of the UN
Educational, Scientific and Cultural
Organization, slammed those murders, and
called the government to pursue guilty.
The situation in this sector got worse after
the June 28 coup d'etat, as mass media were
closed or militarized, and several
journalists were detained or obliged to
abandon the country.
