Brazil's Capital City Celebrates 50th Anniversary

BRASILIA - More than 300,000 Brazilians on Wednesday gathered in central Brasilia to celebrate the city's 50th anniversary as the country's capital.

A series of events including a marathon relay, a paratrooper show, a Disney characters parade as well as volleyball games were held.

Resembling an airplane seen from above, Brasilia is the only city built in the 20th century that is made a world heritage site by United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).

In 1956, the then president Juscelino Kubitschek ordered the construction of Brasilia. It formally became Brazil's capital in 1960.
