Río Segundo (Alajuela - Heredia) Road To Be Expanded To Four Lanes

The Consejo Nacional de Vialidad (CONAVI) announced on Friday the expansion of the Río Segundo road to four lanes for the section between the Castellana and Tropicana gasoline stations.

The road is an important artery to and from the airport and Heredia, running along the north side of the autopista General Cañas, connecting the south side of Heredia to the centre of Alajuela.

The road is a source of major traffic congestion daily as the two lane road cannot handle the increased traffic through the area.

The CONAVI says that 29.000 vehicles daily use the road, which is mainly used as an alternate to the General Cañas.

The road has also become a major area for visitors to Costa Rica as many hotels, both small and large, like the Hampton Inn, are located there, as well as most of the rental car agencies.

The work is expected to take less than a year, the work being awarded to the Spanish consortium, FCC.

However, given the record of the Ministerio de Obras Públicas and Transportes (MOPT) in delivering projects on time, it is doubtful the Río Segundo project will be ready on time as promised.
