Nicaraguan Sailors Detain 25 Colombian Fishermen

(Associated Press) Nicaraguan naval forces have detained 25 Colombians for allegedly fishing in Nicaragua's waters. Capt. Roger Gonzalez Diaz, the chief of the Central American country's naval force, says five fishermen from the Cayman Islands were also arrested.

Gonzalez Dias said Saturday that the Colombian fishing boat was found in waters that Nicaragua considers its territory about 135 miles off its Caribbean coast near the border with Honduras.

Colombian Defense Minister Gabriel Silva confirms Nicaragua seized a Colombian ship.

The two countries have a long-standing legal dispute over claims to Caribbean islands that would determine their maritime border. Colombia contends the areas in dispute are considered open sea while the cases are being heard.
