Alajuelita Rotonda To Be Closed Completely Tonight

The Alajuelita rotonda will be completely closed off tonight beginning at 9pm and until 5am Monday.

The builder of the overpass of the rotonda, MECO, made the announcement to close off the intersection completely as it installs bridge sections weighing up to 70 tons each.

The work on the superstructure, as it is being called, is moving along with a completion date slated by the end of June.

When completed, traffic along the Circunvalación will move over the six lane bridge, while traffic from San José to Alajuelita will move under the bridge, cutting down traffic congestion.

The Circunvalación is the ring road from the west to the east side, running along the south of San José.

The road was built with a series of rotondas to handle cross traffic. However, an increase in traffic made the rotondas obsolete, becoming a source of traffic congestion and bottlenecks.

So far the rotondas at Desamparados and San Sebastian have been modified with an over and under pass. Once the Alajuelita overpass is complete, all that remains to be modified is the Paso Ancho and Zapote rotondas.
