Million Cubans to Vote
HAVANA - The total of 8,468,144 Cuban people
will take part on Sunday local elections to
vote for delegates to the People's Power
Municipal Assemblies (local governments).
Cuba Puts Final Touches to Elections
The president of the National Electoral
Commission, Ana Maria Mari, said that will
be the official number of voters when
beginning elections on Sunday.
A run off will take place on Sunday May 2 in
those electoral districts in which any of
the 34,776 nominated candidates have over 50
percent of the valid vote.
The 15,093 delegates to the People's Power
Municipal Assemblies will be elected at
Sunday local elections and they will remain
in their posts for two years and a half
without receiving any remuneration.
According to official figures, three of each
four men and women included in the voting
paper are up to 50 years old, a figure
higher to the 53.9 percent that represents
that group chosen in our society.
