Brazil Begins Campaign to Prevent High Blood Pressure

BRASILIA - Brazil's Health Minister José Gomes Temporao will launch on Monday a nationwide campaign to prevent high blood pressure under the slogan " It is a decision, it is just up to you".

The campaign is headed by Brazilian Societies of Hypertension, Cardiology and Nephrology together with the Health Ministry and aims to make people aware of the importance of preventing and treating this disease.

Cardiologist and campaign coordinator Luiz Bortolotto told local media that this is one of the main diseases leading to brain haemorrhage, main cause of death in Brazil.

Some 80 percent of the brain stroke in Brazil is related to high blood pressure, said Bortolotto.

High blood pressure affects 5 percent of Brazilian minors and adolescents, equivalent to 3.5 million people. Some 60 percent of people who dies under 60 years of age suffered from blood pressure.
