Storm Affects 54,000 In
Southern Brazil
RIO DE JANEIRO - Continuous storms have
forced hundreds of people homeless in
southern Brazil and the total affected
population has reached 54,000.
The strong rains since Thursday has hit
Brazil's Santa Catarina state and eight
municipalities has declared a state of
emergency.
About 3,500 people had to leave their homes,
among whom 443 had nowhere to go and had to
live in temporary shelters.
So far, seven people were injured in the
storms. No deaths were reported.
The storms caused several floods in the
state, and at least four state highways and
one federal highway were blocked by
mudslides.
According to weather forecast, the storms in
Santa Catarina state will continue until
Tuesday.
