Civil Servants
On Strike Today
Costa Rica's
civil servants
are getting
ready this
morning to take
to the streets
in protest
against the
proposed "ley de
salario único"
(single wage
law).
Taking part in
the strike are
teachers of the
Asociación de
Profesores de
Segunda
Enseñanza (APSE)
and municipal
workers.
Public workers
will be
gathering at 10am this
morning in
downtown San
José to make the
walk to the MIDEPLAN offices
in San Pedro de
Montes de Oca.
Joining the
public workers
in strike are
the Porteadores
- the informal
taxi drivers -
who are expected
to cause
congestion with
their actions of
"tortuguismo.
The porteadores
are not
protesting the
wage law, but
taking the
advantage to
take to the
streets to
demonstrate
their
displeasure with
the government
and their
attempt to
legalize their
position.
Organizers told
the press that
the march will
be along Avenida
Segunda in
downtown San
José, starting
at the Parque
Central. Also,
protests are
expected in
various areas of
Guanacaste and
Puntarenas,
Heredia, and
Limón.
In Cartago, the
protests will be
centred in from
the Cartago
municipal
offices, while
in Alajuela the
protest action
will take place
along the
Bernardo Soto
highway.
The worker's
unions assure
that there will
be no blockade
of highways.
