Chinchilla
Suffers First
Cabinet Loss
Although it will
be more than a
week before
Laura Chinchilla
takes office,
the
president-elect
has already
suffered its
first loss, with
the resignation
of Rocio Cerdas,
designated
president of the
Instituto
Nacional de las
Mujeres (Inamu).
The resignation
of Cerdas stems
from questions
being asked by
the Contraloría
General de la
República
(Comptroller's
office) over
inconsistencies
in her annual
sworn statement
of assets as
deputy director
of the Servicios
Técnicos de la
Asamblea
Legislativa
(Technical
Services
department of
the Legislative
Assembly).
"It would have
been a great
honour to
participate in
the first Costa
Rican government
headed by a
woman. However,
I consider that
in view of the
trust and a
matter of
principle it is
not prudent that
I take the
position until
the process in
question has
been completed
and my
performance has
been cleared",
said Cerdas in a
press release
sent out by
Chinchilla's
press office.
The press
release
explained that
Chinchilla would
reconsider
Cerdas to the
post if the
Contraloría
clear Cerdas of
any wrongdoing.
