San José - Guapiles Remains Closed

Take note that the San José - Guapiles route continues closed due to mudslides near the Zurquí tunnel from the heavy rain of the past couple of days.

Work crews have been busy cleaning up the debris and it is hoped that the road will be re-opened by late afternoon today (Thursday).

Consejo Nacional de Vialidad (Conavi) say although the expect the road to re-open, it may not be or may have to be closed again, all depending on the weather.

The weather has played a major role in traffic problems since Monday, as heavy afternoon rain has been the cause of sewers backing up, mud slides in various areas and 65 accidents between 1:30pm and 8:30pm on Monday, April 26, more than three times the normal for the period.

Slick tires and poor driving habits the main cause of the accidents, according to the Policía de Tránsito.

To avoid being another statistic, it is recommended not to drive in pouring rain.
