El Salvador Activates
Emergency System After Heavy Rains
SAN SALVADOR - El Salvador on Friday
activated its emergency response system
after heavy rains associated with a tropical
wave that has already caused three deaths.
According to the Civil Protection director,
Jorge Melendez, a Green Alert was declared
due to the country's high vulnerability
after a prolonged rainy season.
Melendez called for paying special attention
to urban risks such as landslides, flooding
and subsidence, and urged drivers to take
precautions to avoid accidents.
The rain caused three deaths on Thursday
evening in the city of La Union, about 115
miles southeast of San Salvador.
Experts predict that the heaviest rain may
last from Friday night until Saturday.
