Women
Legislators
of the
Americas
Meet in
Ecuador
QUITO -
Delegations
from 20
countries
are
arriving
in this
capital
to
participate
in the
Conference
of Women
Parliamentarians
of the
Americas,
which
begins
Wednesday
at the
Ecuadorian
Parliament.
Linda
Machuca,
president
of the
Group of
Women
Parliamentarians
of the
Americas
in the
National
Assembly,
said
delegations
from
Argentina,
Bolivia,
Brazil,
Canada,
Cuba,
Costa
Rica, El
Salvador,
Guatemala
and
Mexico,
as well
as
Paraguay,
the
Dominican
Republic,
Saint
Vincent
and the
Grenadines,
and
Ecuador,
are now
in
Quito.
The
issues
they
will
debate
include
"The
Results
of
Women's
Rights
on the
Continent,"
a
critical
look at
legislation
that
affects
women
socially
and
politically.
Other
themes
are "The
political
experience
in
women's
diversity,"
and
"Evaluation
of
positive
actions
to raise
women's
participation
in
decision-making."
Machuca,
also
vice
president
of the
International
Relations
Commission
in the
Ecuadorian
Congress,
will
also
analyze
the
challenges
faced by
the
women
parliamentarians
of the
continent.
The
meeting,
whose
slogan
is
"Women
in
Power:
Challenges
for the
21st
Century,"
will be
held for
two
days.
