Salvador
Rejects
US
Anti-Immigrant
Law
SAN
SALVADOR
- The
government
of El
Salvador
expressed
its
rejection
of the
anti-immigrant
law in
the US
state of
Florida,
considered
much
more
aggressive
than the
one
enacted
in
Arizona.
At a
press
conference,
Foreign
Minister
Hugo
Martinez
stated
that his
government
is very
concerned
about
this
initiative
that
criminalizes
migrants
and
proposes
severe
penalties
against
illegal
immigrants.
The
legislation
was
introduced
this
week by
Florida
Attorney
General
Bill
MacCollum,
who
aspires
to be
elected
state
governor
in the
November
elections.
The
Salvadoran
minister
expressed
regret
at
mixing
the
electoral
aspirations
of a
candidate
with
such a
sensitive
issue as
the
rights
of
migrants.
He
reiterated
his
position
in favor
of
comprehensive
immigration
reform
in the
United
States
and
advocated
that the
issue
falls
within
the
jurisdiction
of
federal
authorities.
The
Florida
bill
would
allow
police
to check
the
immigration
status
of
suspected
undocumented
immigrants
and
provides
sanctions
against
those
who
employ
or rent
apartments
to such
persons.
Unlike
Arizona,
the
Florida
proposal
converts
third-degree
felonies
to
second
degree,
which
results
in more
severe
sanctions.
Central
American
countries
discussed
forming
a common
front to
combat
this
anti-immigrant
initiative.
According
to
estimates,
62
percent
of the
estimated
12
million
illegal
immigrants
in the
United
States
come
from
Mexico,
530,000
from El
Salvador,
480,000
from
Guatemala
and
320,000
from
Honduras. |
