Installs
Green
Technology
in Costa
Rica
Chiquita
Brands
International
Inc.
says a
new
“biodigester”
system
installed
in Costa
Rica
will
turn
organic
material
from
banana
farming
into
sustainable
energy
for its
plant
and
fertilizer
for
local
farmers.
The
technology
is now
in place
at
Chiquita’s
Mundimar
S.A.
facility
in
Guapilis,
Costa
Rica.
The
biodigester
will
convert
fruit
waste
and
processing
water
from
banana
operations
into
electrical
and heat
energy,
and
produce
nutrient
rich
fertilizer
material
for
local
palm
farmers.
Cincinnati-based
Chiquita
(NYSE:
CQB)
said the
process
is
carbon
neutral.
“Chiquita’s
new
biodigester
is at
the
forefront
of our
global
sustainability
efforts,”
said
corporate
responsibility
officer
Manuel
Rodriguez
in a
press
release.
“This
technology
enables
us to
harness
the full
energy
potential
of fruit
materials
that
previously
could
not be
captured.”
The
technology
was
designed
by a
company
called
BioSinergia.
