While
Pastora
Might Be
A
Laughable
Pawn,
Ortega
Is Not

“You got
a book,
I got a
book,
all
God’s
children
now got
a book
from
Nicaragua
and
Costa
Rica.”
And they
are
free!
As a
young
person,
I played
a lot of
tennis,
professional
tennis
and was
ranked a
couple
of times
and
knocked
off a
lot more
than
once by
players
of
lesser
ability
with
more
talent.
That
does not
say much
for my
focus,
nor my
motives
to pay
bills
for
other
studies
because
nobody
really
needs a
slow
tennis
player
who
lived on
the
slice
backhand
on the
European
circuit
What I
learned
from on
court
humiliation
is that
the
opposition
was
always
dangerous
and
often
times
better
prepared
than
myself.
I equate
this
with the
case of
Nicaragua.
Right
now in
Costa
Rica we
have an
almost
forgotten
international
episode
overwhelmed
by the
many
Christmas
celebrations.
Whatever
we say
about
the
character
of
Daniel
Ortega,
he is
not
naïve
and not
stupid.
Nicaragua´s
preparation
for the
International
Court of
Justice,
(The
Hague –
La Haya)
is
comprehensive
and
needs to
be
respected
if Costa
Rica is
to win.
From a
simple
case of
dredging
and
depositing
sediment
on Costa
Rican
shores,
we have
escalated
step one
into a
major
border
confrontation
fringing
on armed
intervention
sucking
in
Honduras
to boot.
Only the
most
patriotic
or most
naïve
would
not read
or learn
of the
Nicaraguan
arguments.
The
government
has sold
to its
masses
that the
issue is
over
ownership
to the
River
San Juan
which
has
already
been
determined
and is a
non-issue.
In
addition,
they
claim
that the
contamination
of their
river is
not from
Nicaragua
but
rather
from the
farms
and
insecticides
of Costa
Rica.
The Rio
Colorado!
As well,
Nicaragua
has a
highly
regarded
international
expert
to who
supports
that
claim.
If that
is the
repetitive
information
you get
from the
government,
from the
press
and from
the
media
that is
what you
believe.
Just
like
North
Korea!
He who
controls
the
media,
controls
the
minds
and
hearts.
While we
know who
or what
is right
or
wrong,
the only
question
is what
a third
party, a
deciding
party
such as
The ICR
and the
UN
perceive
who is
right or
wrong?
That´s
what is
important
and
nothing
more.
As it
effects
tourism,
road
conditions,
weather,
costs
and
crime
are far
more
important
in the
decision
making
process.
However,
if this
issue
with
Nicaragua
explodes
into a
shooting
or even
international
headlines,
it will
kill the
tourist
business
for
2010.
Something
this
country
cannot
afford.
Internally,
when the
thousands
of
Nicaragua
workers
go home
for the
holidays,
how many
can
return
to a
rumored
closed
Costa
Rica
border
policy?
We
cannot
expect a
quick
resolution
as
Nicaragua
keeps
changing
the
question.
As I
understand
it the
only,
and I
mean
only
issue is
that
Nicaragua
has made
claim to
the Isla
Calero
and has
caused
environmental
damage.
Not the
dredging,
not the
mosquitoes,
not the
contamination
from Rio
Colorado….it
is the
claim of
land
which
belongs
to Costa
Rica. We
cannot
lose
sight of
that or
Ortega´s
may very
well
win.
We
cannot
underestimate
Nicaragua
as
buffoons,
criminals,
thoughtless
in this
fray! I
did in
tennis,
and it
was a
mistake.
For
better
than two
weeks I
have
read
their
side of
the
issue
and
assure
you
these
guys are
prepared
and
while
Pastora
might be
a
laughable
pawn,
Ortega
is not.
