Make
Sure
Your
Cell
Phone or
GPS Is
Approved
For Use
In Costa
Rica
A
popular
gift for
Christmas
is
giving a
loved
one a
cellular
phone.
But, be
warned,
make
sure it
is an
"approved"
(homolgado)
phone or
risk
being
disappointed
when it
comes to
connecting
to the
ICE
cellular
network.
The
Instituto
Costarricense
de
Electricidad
(ICE) -
the
state
telecom
- said
this
week
that
only
approved
phones
would be
connected,
this in
line
with a
directive
from the
Superintendencia
de
Telecomunicaciones
(Sutel)
issued
last
January,
that
both ICE
and
future
operators
should
connect
approved
phones
to
ensure
quality
service.
Although
ICE has
not
stuck to
the
letter
of the
directive,
it now
says it
plans
to.
The
approved
phones
are
those
phones
on the
Sutel
list of
units
that
have,
according
to the
regulator,
passed
the test
of
working
properly
in Costa
Rica.
Carolina
Mora,
spokesperson
for the
Sutel,
explained
that
operators
(ICE for
now)
must
record
the
untis
IMEI
(internal
phone
serial
number)
that
identifies
the unit
and
cannot
be
activated
by
another
in the
event it
is
reported
lost or
stolen.
This
system
cuts
down on
cellular
phone
theft as
the
operator
can
restrict
connection.
More
said
that the
practice
applies
to ICE
as well
as
future
operators
who
should
be
online
by the
end of
next
year.
