Venezuela: Doctors Treat Storm Victims

Caracas, Dec 10 (Prensa Latina) A contingent of doctors is working to protect the health of more than 130,000 victims of recent torrential rains and flooding that killed dozens and left thousands homeless in 11 states, Venezuelan Health Minister of Health Eugenia Sader announced.

No epidemics have broken out in the 851 shelters set up around the country, Sader said.

The main health problems that have arisen are respiratory and stomach ailments, but measures were being taken to treat those affected, she said.

According to the minister, a free hotline has been activated so that people with problems can call and make their reports to receive care and the necessary medicines.

The official called on flooding refugees to cover trash deposits, keep water clean and handle food properly during its preparation.

She said pregnant women were being vaccinated and people with AIDS were being given special attention. Condoms and contraceptives were also being distributed.
