Chilean
Public
Service
Workers
Abandon
Strike
SANTIAGO
DE CHILE
- The
public
service
unions
in Chile
announced
Thursday
the end
of their
strike,
after
the
legislature
approved
a wage
proposal
of the
Government.
The
president
of the
National
Association
of
Public
Employees,
Raúl de
la
Puente,
confirmed
the end
of the
strike
and did
not hide
his
disappointment
over the
attitude
of the
deputy,
and
president
of the
Socialist
Party,
Osvaldo
Andrade,
who by
absenting
himself
from the
vote
tipped
the
balance
in favor
of the
Government's
project.
The
sector's
trade
union
leaders
also
criticized
the
position
of
president
of the
Confederation
of
Workers,
Arturo
Martínez,
who,
according
to
locals,
promoted
Andrade's
behavior
in the
House,
where
the
controversial
initiative
passed
by just
one
vote.
De la
Puente
stressed
the
strength
of
workers
in Chile
in times
of
struggle
against
the
neoliberal
model
and
against
a
government
of
businessmen
who, he
said, do
not know
the
characteristics
of the
work of
public
officers.
He also
recalled
the
inflexibility
of the
Government
in
maintaining
a wage
increase
of 4.2
percent,
well
below
the
request
of the
sector.
"We are
public
servants
and have
dignity.
We have
shown in
the
demonstrations",
De la
Puente
said.
