Mercosur
Summit
deepens
social
integration

40th
Mercosur
Summit
approved
Friday
four
statements
on the
Strategic
Plan for
Social
Action,
the
Falkland
Islands,
migration
and the
commemoration
of the
passing
of the
Liberator
Simon
Bolivar.
The text
on the
Strategic
Action
Plan,
which
was
approved
by the
leaders
of the
Southern
Common
Market (Mercosur:
Argentina,
Brasil,
Paraguay
and
Uruguay),
constitutes
a major
contribution
to
achieving
the
objective
of
deepening
the
social
dimension
of
integration.
The
presidents
said
that
social
policies
have
been
promoted
by the
State
and have
allowed
a
reduction
of
social
inequalities
and a
significant
reduction
of
poverty
in the
countries
of the
region
in the
last
decade.
On the
Falkland
Islands,
the
presidents
of the
member
and
partner
States
reiterated
their
support
for
Argentina's
legitimate
rights
over
those
territories
and
repudiated
the
exploration
and
exploitation
of
natural
resources
in the
Argentina
platform
developed
by the
United
Kingdom.
As for
Migration,
the
participants
in the
40th
Summit
reaffirmed
their
strongest
condemnation
and
repudiation
of any
act of
racism,
discrimination
and
xenophobia,
while
expressing
the need
to
ensure
respect
for and
promotion
of human
rights
of
migrants
and
their
families.
Moreover,
on the
180th
anniversary
of the
disappearance
of the
Liberator
Simón
Bolívar,
participants
stressed
with
respect
and
admiration
his
emancipatory
action
that
laid the
foundations
for the
construction
of the
republics
and
states
to
consolidate
the
region
as a
center
of
autonomous
power.
