How To Avoid
Congestion On New San José - Caldera
Highway? Increase The Tolls
Costa Ricans had been waiting more than
thirty years for the road from San José to
Caldera to be built, a road that promised to
reduce the trip to the Pacific coast in less
than an hour.
Mid last week the road finally inaugurated
and by the weekend Costa Ricans took to the
road to see it for themselves, ending the
dream of less than an hour in an instant,
when the road system collapsed under the
sheer weight of its users.
Traffic jams began at La Guacima toll
station and continued well past Orotina as
some 25.000 vehicles used the road of a
capacity of less than half that.
So, transport officials have been looking
for a solution and this is what the Consejo
Nacional de Concesiones has come up with:
raise the toll charges.
The Consejo report said that the heavy
traffic during the first few days of opening
was not normal, Costa Ricans were curious to
see the road finally finished, a road that
has been talked about over and over for
three decades.
However, the Consejo, in its report, also
sees that the road may be more of a success
and to avoid congestion is suggesting to
increase toll charges during peak times,
discouraing traffic.
The idea is to reduce toll charges during
off peak times, compensating motorists who
aovid using the road at peak times.
The final decision on ways to reduce
congestion will be made public next week as
government of officials and officials of
Autopistas del Sol, the company that
operates the road and the tolls under
concession, meet.
