Solís and Guevara
Concede Defeat Early
With about 25% of the votes counted, Otton
Solis of the PAC and Otto Guevara of the ML,
the two main rivals of Laura Chinchilla,
conceded defeat in Sunday's presidential
election in Costa Rica.
Solis of the Partido Acción Cuidadana (PAC),
as the first to congratulate Chinchilla in a
television interview, calling on the first
woman to be president to keep her promises.
Solís also said this was his last campaign,
making room for others in the party to
continue the fight.
Moments later, Otto Guevara of the
Movimiento Libertario (ML) entered the main
ballroom of the San José Palacio hotel,
vowing triumph, the party's success of more
than doubling their support over 2006 when
the party obtained almost a 9% approval.
With over 90% of the votes counted, the ML
has a 21% approval.
Guevara congratulated Chinchilla, but vowed
to keep fighting for changes, the main stay
of his campaign, from the legislative
assembly.
Voter participation was about 65%, according
to the Tribunal Supremo de Elecciones (TSE)
which has expected a strong voter showing,
bettering the participation of 2006.
