Solís Almost Does It
Again
Ottón Solís, leader of the Partido Acción
Cuidadana (PAC), held third place in the
polls from the beginning of the 2010
presidential campaign, following almost
winning the presidency in 2006.
The PAC campaign and its leader, seemed to
many, to have lost momentum in this third
time around, especially when it found itself
in financial problems in the last weeks of a
costly campaign.
Although Ottón remained positive and spouted
that Costa Ricans were behind him, most
wrote him off.
However, the voting results placed him in
second place, again, the closest to
challenging the Arias backed Chinchilla
candidacy, although not as close as in 2006
when he faced Oscar Arias directly.
With 95% of the votes counted, Solís
obtained 25.2% of the votes, far short of
the 40% required to be a contender, but more
than double of the polls leading up to the
election.
The PAC and Solís performance also beat out
the "red" machine of Otto Guevara who
assured his supporters and Costa Ricans that
he would be the next president with his
"time for change" campaign.
Solís was the first to accept defeat with
less than a quarter of the votes counted and
vowed that this campaign, his third attempt
at the presidential chair, would be his last
and he would make room for a new leader of a
party he founded.
