"El Menos Malo"
Couldn't Hide His Disappointment
Although Luis Fishman may have known from
the start of the campaign that his party was
a dead duck and his chances of being elected
president were slim to none, he did show his
disappointment last night at the failure of
the party to reach at least a 10% voter
approval and to elect more legislators.
Fishman, took over the Partido Unidad Social
Cristiana (PUS) party's presidential
candidate after a court the party's chosen
candidate, former presidedent Rafael Angel
Calderon, guilty of embezzlement.
Fishman was the choice of candidate of a
party that is mired in political scandals
and was better than fielding no candidate at
all.
The PUSC party, a party that has alternated
power with the PLN for decades, saw a major
loss in 2006 when Ricardo Toledo placed
third, behind Ottón Solís, who came within
1% of beating Oscar Arias for the
presidency.
Fishman, dubbed himself the "El Menos Malo"
(the least bad), provoking criticism at the
the slogan and at a campaign that offered
nothing new for Costa Ricans.
The final tally will place Fishman and the
PUSC party with less than 4% of the vote
when all the results are in.
