Venezuela Could
Declare Electricity Emergency
CARACAS - The Venezuelan government could
declare power emergency due to the severe
draught caused by El Niño climate
phenomenon, Power Minister Ali Rodriguez
said.
The official announced that it is not yet
necessary to declare that condition, but
that perception could change if affectations
increase.
The water level of the Guri dam has dropped
considerably due to lack of rains, and the
country depends on it to supply hydro
electrical plants responsible for over 70
percent of the service.
"We are facing an emergency though we have
not declared it yet, something we will
probably do," he told José Vicente hoy
program of Televen private channel.
Were the exceptional situation established,
there is no need to be alarmed, Rodriguez
indicated, because it is not the first time
it is decreed in Venezuela. Processes to
acquire equipment for thermoelectric
generation will be sped up, he added.
The minister also praised the support of
several countries to face problems caused by
El Niño, and mentioned Argentina, Brazil,
Cuba, and China among them. |
