Panama Demonstrators Threaten School Year

PANAMA - The new school year, which will begin on March 1st, will probably be affected due to a teacher demonstration that is worrying society, faced with possible hindrances to the learning process.

Representatives of diferent teacher associations, as Veraguas's Educators, Independent Teachers, Special Educators and Santeño Teachers warned that they would demonstrate to support teachers who work in areas difficult to access.

The organizations, with more than 20,000 members, demanded that Education Minister Lucy Molinar answered to petitions by people who work in the above mentioned areas.

Leaders of the Panamanian Teacher Association (ASOPROF) said that demonstration could encourage a national action.

They questioned Molinar's performance, demanding to put the education sector in the hands of an experienced person who was willing to exchange with the different sides that take part in the learning process.

As a consequence of the protest march, authorities hope to implement an experimental program in 40 high schools, in order to improve young people's education as part of educational reforms.
