Venezuela Defines
Parliament Candidates
CARACAS - The Venezuelan political parties
are currently focusing attention on defining
their candidates for the parliamentarian
elections in September, due to that voting's
importance to the national future.
According to President Hugo Chavez, his
supporters must guarantee two thirds of the
165 the National Assembly seats to prevent
the opposition from beginning the
dismantling of the socialist project he has
been leading since 1999.
Meanwhile, opponents are trying to take
advantage of the difficulties derived from
the world crisis and the drop of oil prices,
as well as a crisis of the electricity
sector, caused by a drought, to stop the
left's progress.
Sources of the United Socialist Party of
Venezuela (PSUV) disclosed that the
organization is analyzing three proposals to
choose the candidates for the elections,
taking into account highly-important
regional factors.
The opposition is involved in strong
internal clashes, due to party and personal
cravings that hinder the sector's purpose of
creating a common front with unitary
candidates.
Venezuelan politics is currently centered
around elections, influenced by external
factors, due to a US campaign that was
denounced by Chavez for trying to stop the
advance of regional progressive governments. |
