Insecurity Hurts
Panamanian Society
PANAMA - Insecurity and violence are hurting
negatively the Panamanian society that saw
71 homicides committed in January and 13 so
far in February, warns on Tuesday El Siglo
daily.
According to a statistic survey made by the
newspaper, 32 of the crimes of that type
committed in January took place over the
weekends.
In an effort to control the spiralling
violence, the security corps are carrying
out frequent operations in the so-called red
zones along with putting up checkpoints in
different areas.
The situation looks discouraging due to the
fact that this tendency could lead to a
higher number of deaths than in 2009, when
806 murders were registered.
Authorities consider that one of the causes,
which weighs heavily in the behavior of
crime, is drug-trafficking since Panama is
on the route of shipments towards the United
States and Europe.
Actions against drug-trafficking led last
year to the confiscation of 55.5 tons of
drugs, most of it cocaine.
