For Arias Laura's
Election Is Like A Dream Come True
Costa Rican president, Oscar Arias, did not
hide his great joy on the choice of Costa
Ricans on Sunday electing his former
vice-president, Laura Chinchilla, during her
first visit to Casa Presidencial in Zapote,
since leaving her post in 2008.
Arias was so happy to receive a visit by
Chinchilla, that he himself opened the car
door for the president-elect.
Arias was forbidden by election rules by
taking part in the campaign or voicing his
opinion for his choice of successor. But,
yesterday he did not conceal his
satisfaction at the outcome of Sunday's
vote.
The meeting between Arias and Chinchilla was
for more than 90 minutes.
Arias said that the election of his former
vice-president "is a dream come true".
The make up of Chinchilla's government is
still a mystery.
Although Chinchilla did not advance any
plans for her new government, she did not
discard the possibility that many of the
current ministers and heads of public
institutions remain at their post.
"The fact that a person has occupier a
position in this (Arias) government does not
discredit them", said Chinchilla.
The president-elect's statement could set
the tone for change, a change that includes
moving away from the tradition of appointing
new ministers and heads of institutions with
a new government.
Doña Laura said that the decision will up to
a committee which will be headed by the
country's two vice-presidents elect, Alfio
Piva and Luis Liberman, who will be working
together with the ministro de la Presidencia,
Rodrigo Arias, to complete the transition.
Doña Laura said yesterday that she will
first take a short vacation before taking on
the task of taking over power from Arias on
May 8, telling the press that she hopes that
Argentina's president, Cristina Fernández,
the only sitting woman president in May
(Michelle Bachelet's term as president of
Chile will have ended) will attend her
investiture.
