Russia FM Visit to Nicaragua Historic

MANAGUA - The visit Russian Foreign Minister Serguei Lavrov will pay to Nicaragua on Sunday represents a historic time in bilateral relations, Nicaraguan Charge d'affaires in Russia Luis Alberto Molina Cuadras said earlier this week.

The diplomat said that it would be the first visit by a Russian foreign minister to that country, since the establishment of formal mutual ties on December 12, 1944, although they materialized in 1979, he clarified.

"The visit is an expression of Russia's interest in strengthening its bonds with us. The Russian Federation is a strategic friend to us," the official said.

Nicaragua is open to relations with other countries, based on respect to our sovereignty and internal decisions, and mutual respect in general, in line with the basic principles of the Sandinista Front foreign policy, Molina affirmed.

Agreements in culture, fishing, and other fields are expected to be signed during Lavrov's stay in Nicaragua.

The visit will seal a period of expansion in bilateral relations, which started with President Daniel Ortega's visit to Moscow in December, 2008, the diplomat said.

In Lavrov's talks with Nicaraguan authorities, they will also tackle the structure of the joint commission, the first plenary meeting of which will be held in Managua in mid-2010.
