Chinchilla Headed For
Rio Group Summit
Costa Rica's president elect, Laura
Chinchilla, will hit the road even before
she takes office on May 8, to accompany
president, Oscar Arias, in attending the Rio
Group Summit in the Mexican resort of
Cancun.
The trip is scheduled for the 22nd and
23rd of this month.
This will be the first visit abroad of
Chinchilla, even though she does take office
for another couple of months.
"The Cancun Summit is a good opportunity to
present Laura to the international
community," said Arias.
Chinchilla was vice-president in Arias'
government until she resigned to run for the
presidency in the February 7 elections,
which she won with a landslide victory over
her opponents.
Costa Rica and other Central American
countries joined the Rio Group in the
Cartagena de Indias meeting in Colombia in
2000.
The meeting in the Mexican resort called
Summit of Unity will analyze several
subjects that include regional integration,
the crisis in Haiti after the earthquake on
January 12 and the situation of Honduras
after the coup.
Mexico will hand over to Chile the pro
tempore secretary of this permanent
mechanism of consultation and Concertation.
The Rio Group was created on December 18
1986 and is formed currently by 23 countries
of Latin America and the Caribbean. |
