Honduran Police Thwart
Plot To Kill Minister Of Public Security
TEGUCIGALPA, - Police announced on Wednesday
that they had thwarted a plot to kill
Honduran Minister of Public Security Oscar
Alvarez.
Police agents found a pack containing
weapons and munitions in a bus. They also
found code instructions sent from San Pedro
Sula, a city 240 km northwest of
Teguciagalpa, by alleged gang members, said
the police.
Francisco Lopez, Honduras police
commissioner, said that the authorities had
tightened security, especially on traffic
between San Pedro Sula and the capital city
Tegucigalpa.
"We have to raise alertness and enhance
cooperation between intelligence networks to
neutralize these groups," Lopez said.
Alvarez, who served twice as minister of
public security, is in charge of Honduras'
internal security. During his first term
from 2002 to 2006, he sent to jail some 800
leader of the 18th Street gang and Mara
Salvatrucha gang.
The two gangs, both operating in the U.S.
west coastal city of Los Angeles, are
notorious in Honduras for killing 28
civilian passengers with automatic weapons
during a raid on an intercity bus in
Chamelecon in 2004.
