Belize Begins
Vaccination for Influenza
Belize and Surinam will soon begin a
vaccination campaign against A(H1N1)
influenza in the most vulnerable population
groups. As occurred in the rest of the
Caribbean nations, these territories delayed
almost two months to acquire the medication
due to a 50 percent fall of its world
production and high demand of the
international community.
According to health authorities of these two
nations, the first doses will be
administered to small children, pregnant
women, the elderly and persons suffering
asthma, diabetes or other chronic disease
that could weaken their immune system.
Workers of the Health ministry, airports and
marine ports as well as Police, bombers and
armed forces will also receive the vaccines
that will be available in all the units of
assistance in these regions.
To date Suriname reported a total of 110
confirmed cases of influenza and two deaths.
For its part Belize registered 47 cases and
no deaths due to the pandemic.
Both nations expect a second delivery of
vaccines by the end of the month to complete
immunization of their inhabitants.
Figures released by the World Health
Organization listed 15,292 deaths caused by
the influenza pandemic. |
