Honduras' Return To
OAS Important: Brazil
BRASILIA - Brazil on Friday stressed the
importance of Honduras's return to the
Organization of American States (OAS) and
said the government of Porfirio Lobo should
adopt measures to ensure national
reconciliation.
The Brazilian government wants to resume
dialogue with Tegucigalpa, presidential
spokesman Marcelo Baumbach told a press
conference ahead of President Luiz Inacio
Lula da Silva's upcoming trip to Mexico,
Cuba, Haiti and El Salvador next week.
Honduras was suspended from the OAS after
the coup d'etat that ousted President Manuel
Zelaya on June 28.
Porfirio Lobo, who was elected in regularly
scheduled presidential elections in
November, took office last month, but his
government has not been recognized by many
countries in the region.
Support for Honduras' return to the OAS will
be the main point of Brazil's position at
the second Summit of Latin America and the
Caribbean and an annual Rio Group Summit to
be held in Cancun, Mexico on Feb. 22 and 23.
Baumbach said the Brazilian government wants
to discuss the situation in Honduras with
countries that maintained a common stance
during the Honduran crisis last year.
Brazil hopes that Honduras would take
actions, such as the establishment of a
truth commission to investigate what
happened during the political crisis last
year, and the possible return of former
President Zelaya to the country, in which
way a national reconciliation may be
initiated, Baumbach said.
President Lula hopes that any solution to
the current crisis "will not set a precedent
of support for coup plotters in Latin
America," Baumbach said, "It is very
important that this does not happen."
Zelaya, who flew to the Dominican Republic
in January after four months holed up inside
the Brazilian embassy in Tegucigalpa, told
reporters in Santo Domingo: "We recognize
that president Lobo won the elections, but
we condemn the origin of those elections."
