ICE Head Wants Another
Four Years
Pedro Pablo Quirós is perhaps without a
question the most important person in Costa
Rica. Quirós is the head of the Instituto
Costarricense de Electricidad (ICE), the
state institution that brings up light and
power and allows our telephones to make and
receive calls.
Traditionally public institutions undergo a
change of administration with the coming of
a new administration. This time around,
however, there may be little changes by
president-elect Laura Chinchilla, and Quirós
is one who is looking to continuing for the
next four years.
Quirós has not hidden his desire to continue
the institution that he has led for the last
three years or so.
In a recent interview, the head of ICE, said
that the institution has achieved some major
goals under his leadership, like the
introduction of 3G cellular service that was
sent our to tender and operating in less
than a year, a record time in Costa Rica and
in particular with ICE.
"What I want is for ICE not to throw in the
towel. ICE has to work hard, changes or
not", said Quirós referring to changes in
the telecommunications sector that has
already seen ICE lose its monopoly - though
it continues to be the only telecom provider
- and face competition.
Without giving details, Quirós said that he
has yet to enter into conversations with the
coming administration, but assures that he
will always be tied to the great projects of
the institution.
Quirós refused to speculate in what
direction he will go if he has to give the
ICE presidency.
"As I am the oldest of all, perhaps I have
less anxiety" said Quirós. |
