Back Rio Group Expansion
PLAYA DEL CARMEN, Mexico - Ecuador and
Venezuela back Mexico's proposal to expand
the 24-member Rio Group to take in Caribbean
countries, officials said Sunday.
Ecuadorian Foreign Minister Ricardo Patino
said a document will be presented for the
body's creation.
A so-called Unity Summit involving the Rio
Group and the the Caribbean Community (Caricom)
is being held at this Mexican resort.
"The decision to create an entity for Latin
American and Caribbean states is already
very advanced," said Patino.
Venezuelan Foreign Minister Nicolas Maduro
also said foreign ministers from the region
had discussed "true unity" via the creation
of the new body.
The aim of the new bloc is to promote common
goals in the Latin American region,
including fighting poverty and promoting
development. Some experts see it as an
alternative to the U.S.-weighted
Organization of American States.
