29 Countries Restore
Ties With Honduras: Honduran FM
TEGUCIGALPA - Honduran Foreign Minister
Mario Canahuati on Sunday said that his
country had restored diplomatic ties with 29
countries since President Porfirio Lobo Sosa
took office on Jan. 27, according to news
reaching here from Tegucigalpa.
Canahuati, in an interview with El Tiempo
daily, said the country had restored its
ties with 29 countries, as well as
international cooperation in there spheres
of regional security, trade, and fight
against drug trafficking.
The Honduran government is working to
restore its diplomatic ties with Brazil,
Mexico and Chile among others, and to
normalize relations among members of "the
Bolivarian Alliance for the Americas" led by
Honduras and Venezuela, said Canahuati.
On June 28, 2009, then Honduran President
Manuel Zelaya was ousted in a military coup,
which was strongly condemned by the
international community that had been
demanding Zelaya's restoration to power.
The Honduran congress voted against the
reinstatement of Zelaya as Lobo won the
presidential election on Nov. 29, which was
boycotted by Zelaya and slammed as
illegitimate by Brazil and Venezuela.
