Raul Castro Attends
Unity Summit
PLAYA DEL CARMEN, MEXICO - President
Raul Castro leads Cuba''s delegation to the
Latin America and Caribbean Unity Summit,
taking place Monday and Tuesday in Cancun,
Mexico.
Foreign Minister Bruno Rodriguez and other
officials from the Cuban Ministry of Foreign
Affairs are also accompanying Raul Castro,
Granma newspaper reports.
The gathering to be opened by Mexican Head
of State Felipe Calderon at the Gran Velas
Hotel in the Mayan Riviera has a broad
agenda and the aim to make progress on the
creation of a genuinely Latin American and
Caribbean organization.
The analysis about the new grouping that
will bring together the region's 33
countries is much advanced and there are
still only some aspects to be defined.
As well as regional integration, the event
will also look into several issues and adopt
declarations on the reconstruction of Haiti,
Argentina's sovereignty over the Falkland
Islands and on climate change.
The draft of the declaration acknowledges
the efforts made by several countries to
support the Haitian people, stating that
Haiti is a sovereign nation and the
international aid should be coordinated by
its government and the UN.
The Unity Summit will approve a resolution
against the economic, trade and financial
blockade the US government has maintained
against Cuba for almost 50 years.
Twenty five Heads of State or Government
have confirmed their participation in the
summit that bring together the Rio Group and
the Summit of Latin America and the
Caribbean on Integration and Development. |
