1.4 Million Salvadoran
Children Attend School
SAN SALVADOR - School began in El Salvador
with 1.4 million children enrolled who, for
the first time, will receive uniforms, shoes
and school materials free of charge.
Salvadoran president, Mauricio Funes said
during the inauguration of Sotero Lainez
center that education would be a priority of
his administration.
"Education is the basic pillar. Without
educated citizens progress is impossible; it
is impossible to build a happy society," the
president said.
Funes who reached power as a candidate of
Farabundo Marti National Liberation Front
informed that his government invested 80
million dollars to give each student two
uniforms, a pair of shoes, notebooks,
pencils and other materials.
Distribution of these school materials
already began in some state centers and will
conclude in February.
Students of the 5,000 public schools will
also receive daily food rations.
These programs are part of a government goal
to promote education and favor the poorer
and historically marginalized sectors.
