AH1N1 Vaccine Arrives In Costa Rica Tomorrow

Finally the wait is over, the AH1N1 vaccine is due to arrive tomorrow (Thursday) following delays in shipment by the Organización Panamericana de la Salud (OPS) - Panamerican Health Organization - that is supplying the vaccine to Latin countries after negotiation en masse with the manufacturers.

The ministra de Salud, María Luisa Ávila, confirmed that the first 250.000 doses of the vaccine will be on Costa Rican soil, arriving at 10:30pm on a Arrow Air flight from the United States.

"I am very happy because finally we will have the vaccines", said Ávila.

The ministra added that she hopes that the vaccine will begin distribution by next Wednesday at the latest, after the doses have been examined for quality and are the same requested from the OPS.

The doses arriving on tomorrow are from the French laboratory Sanofi Pasteur under the brand name Panenza.

Ministra Ávila said the first to receive the vaccine are pregnant women with more than six months term and health professionals (doctors, nurses, lab technicians, etc).

The vaccine is being distributed in Costa Rica free of charge to all those identified by the ministerio de Salud as being in the high risk group, those in addition to the aforementioned, include patients with asthma, diabetes, hypertension and obesity.

The vaccine is being distributed by the Caja Costarricense de Seguro Social (CCSS) pharamcy.

Minister Ávila said, however, private pharmacies can market the product as long as they meet the requirements.
